I jumped into keeping a marine fish tank back in 2014. I started with a nano and quickly upgraded to the clearseal reefspace 700. The current tank I have now is the Reefer 170. I have learnt my experience through reading, other reefers and learning as I go.
- Royal Gramma / Gramma loreto
I come from a basic tropical fish keeping background, and after a good 5 year break I went straight into saltwater as I prefer the colours and challenge with a mixed reef.
- Ocellaris Clownfish / Amphiprion ocellaris
The tanks filtration comes from the live rock, I have a skimmer in the sump and a small refugium which was converted from the small ato supplied with the tank.
Weekly water changes of 25L
Radion G4 pro rx15 running coral lab sps a+b programme.
Flow comes from x2 ecotech mp10w and from the tanks water pump.
Current fish livestock as of 26.08.20
clown fish x2
pink scooter blenny
blue reef chromis x3
Balling light method. I currently dose alkalinity and calcium to keep the tank stable. Magnesium currently stays put with water changes, occasionally needing to have a little top up.
Full red sea recepi and additives are used on the tank.
I feed daily, mostly twice a day, once with flake/pellets and then the evening with frozen - frozen varies.
Daily glass cleaning, feeding and check over.
I aim for a weekly 25L water change.
Levels tend to be tested weekly, although some more often than others - alk is tested the most.
Inspiration & Goals
Future goals will be to go bigger - eventually. For now I'm letting the corals in this tank grow out. I don't have room for anymore corals really, as I want them to have space to grow larger.
Words of Wisdom
Take it slow and steady! Try not to instant fix things - can cause more problems.
Disasters & Regrets
I had a tank crash after moving house around 2 years ago - trying to fix the rock work back together and using too much putty. It killed most fish - other than the 2 clownfish I still have today.
I kept leaving the net lid off the tank - lost a few fish to jumpers. I also regret not moving my larger wrasse on sooner when he started becoming agro - cost me my peacock wrasse.
