ECOSYSTEM DESCRIPTION
---------------------
*Kelp forests can be found most commonly on the west side of America but can also be found all over the ocean sided U.S.

*Kelp forests are underwater areas with a high density of kelp that covers a large part of the worlds coastlines.

*Kelp forests provide food and shelter for thousands of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammal species.

ABIOTIC & BIOTIC FACTORS
------------------------
*ABIOTIC
> Wind, rocks, light and heat.
*BIOTIC
> Animals, plants, bacteria

LIVING CONDITIONS
-----------------
*Kelp is located in cool, shallow waters near the shore.
*There is a great variety of plants and animals, more than any other ocean community.
*Many organisms use the thick blades as safe shelter for their young from predators, and even storms.
*Many mammals use use kelp forests for feeding. These animals include whales, sea lions, gulls and shore birds.

HUMAN IMPACTS ON THE KELP FOREST
--------------------------------
*POSITIVE
> Many people are helping out with the sea urchin problem. They are using a special device called air lifts. They obtain about a million urchins every week, helping greatly.
*NEGATIVE
> As humans fish, they decrease the amount of predators who live in these forests, causing the growth of sea urchins to increase which can destroy the habitat further. This can lead to a decrease in other species growth because of the overpopulation of sea urchins.

ANIMALS & PLANTS
----------------
*WHAT TYPE OF ANIMALS ARE FOUND HERE?
> Many different species of fish, including kelp bass, giant sea bass, rockfishes, semicossyphus and cabezon.
> There are also lots of sea urchins
> There are bigger animals such as sea otters, sharks and the bat ray.
> Most animals in the kelp forest are different invertebrates
*WHAT KIND OF PLANTS ARE FOUND HERE?
> Giant kelp is the main type of algae, and there is also lots of seaweed.
